On most weekends you can find Robert photographing weddings—either in New York (where he lives) or farther a field: in various locations around the US and abroad. Robert finds wedding ceremonies to be more than just a series of actions, people, and images to be “captured,” but rather recognizes them as events full of deep personal and cultural significance, particular to a specific time and place and community. As such, he assumes the responsibility of documenting these moments with great respect, believing them to be deserving of a discerning eye and an artistic hand. In this way, he hopes to help each couple honor the beauty not only of age-old traditions, but also the distinctive and meaningful celebrations fashioned by those couples. Robert enjoys getting to know each one of his clients through the places, symbols, rituals, and yes—food-- that are unique to their tradition and infuses those elements into the story he tells through pictures. Robert applies the same personal perspective and distinct artistic flair to all of his photographic endeavors, allowing his subjects to represent their best selves.
"Firstly - I have to say that I always knew that you were a talented and modest photographer, but had no idea you were this modest. The pictures are UNREAL!!!!! Amazing and beautiful and so captivating! You captured moments so well that I feel the rush of the love and joy of the wedding occasion every time I look at the pictures. Congratulations on such a fabulous job. She absolutely loves them- and mentioned to me that it was the best decision I made- other than marrying her of course...." Sumesh Sachar, Singapore

It is hard to believe that one year has gone by so fast! Last year on this day we where married surrounded by our close friends and family. I am better with pictures then I am with words, here are few gracious words from some of our guests who signed our picture book at our wedding. But first, to my wife: Thank you for such an incredible year, I am looking forward to many more! I love you!
“Bobby and Christy- The day that we hoped for has finally come. Can’t tell you how happy we are to see you both so happy! We wish for you every moment of your marriage to be wonderful, however, when its not so wonderful your love will see you through the rough times. You need to let each other know everyday how much you love each other. Never take each other for granted. I do believe you were meant to be together. Just know that a whole new life has just begun. Love Mama and Daddy” My parents in-law.
“Chrystal and Bobby- …a successful marriage is…falling in love with the same person…over and over again… Enjoy falling in love with each other for the rest of your lives, Congrats.” Amaria, Alois and Zuva (friends and Chrystal and I’s god child)
“Congratulations
Hope to see you soon
” Sarah, My niece
“I love you Aunt Chris and Bobby” Mallory, Chrystal’s niece
Merci New York recently featured Angela and Jeff’s Engagement session that I photographed in late May. We spent the early evening visiting their favorite spots in and around Brooklyn Heights and the Brooklyn Bridge. I can’t wait to photograph their wedding this August! Read the full post at Merci New York.
Diane and Stuart traveled the ocean over to have their wedding on the Brooklyn Bridge. Diane from Ireland and Stuart from England. They readied at the Standard Hotel and we spent the afternoon visiting their favorite sites around the city. Find out more about their wedding on Always a Brides Maid Blog who planned the wedding.
It was a pleasure working with Matthew Robbins team for Jen & Mike’s wedding at the W Hoboken, Matthew recently posted an entry on Martha Stewart Wedding blog about color inspiration containing a few images from their fall wedding.
Food is often part of many ceremonies and in particular wedding ceremonies. A Chinese wedding may include a tea ceremony, a Jewish wedding the drinking of wine and a Persian wedding the breaking of bread with a sword. There are many traditions that have a strong connection with food and which demonstrate the rich cultural world we live in and the people who live by those traditions.
We decided to include food as an important part of our wedding ceremony, and we made it our own. The love and joy of discovering, cooking and eating food has been a facet of our relationship from when we first met and has only grown over time. We both love figs, the fresher the better, and we had the idea of holding a brief ceremony to plant a fig tree the day before our wedding. The tree is now full of leaves and reaches up toward the sky. The tree lies in the front yard of my new parent in-law’s home (Richard and Debra in Reidsville, NC). In many ways the tree is a symbol of our relationship, it is our own but shared, it takes work, love and support from us and our family, and the better it is cared for the stronger and more fruitful it will grow. And we just can’t wait to sink our teeth into a rip fig in a few years!
Thank you to my brother Tim for capturing these moments that are so special to us.
I unwrap the 2 year old sapling fig tree for preparation for planting. (We ordered three trees, Italian Everbearing, Turkey Brown and Peter’s Honey, one of which we planted that day as part of the ceremony and the other late that week. We didn’t keep track of which one’s are which and are waiting for each to get larger so we can identify each varietal by the shape of the leaves and type of fruit).

Our officiant and family say a few words as we look on american gothic style.
Chrystal waters the tree for the first time.
The tree today, 10 months later, via Chrystal’s iphone.

An example of what we are hoping for. Figs served as Donna and David’s Provence, France wedding I photographed in 2007.

The Value of a Planner
by guest blogger Jennifer Crone of Private Receptions
Often times our brides come to us, as Wedding Planners, with a photographer in mind that they saw online, or a referral from a friend. Our job is to make sure the couple chooses a photographer who fits their style, overall goal for the resulting photos, and can work well within the venue. If the couple saw only photos from outdoor ceremonies and theirs will be indoors in a dimly lit room, this photographer may not be the best choice for their venue. It’s important to be sure the photographer and couple are on the same page about their ideas, and this is where an industry insider (planner) can do wonders with communication. For example, Robert Wagner’s website really shows the depth of field of his work and how he can thrive in different environments. This is something important when researching.
Often we, as planners, have been on multiple site visits to the venue before the big day whereas other vendors haven’t. A few weeks ago we were in a venue that we knew was narrow and dark, so we gave the photographer a heads up to bring a light and be prepared to maneuver in a tight space. We’re here to make things easier!
Photography is a very important part of a wedding. The photos are the memories that will last forever and capture the emotion of the day. It’s our job to remind couples of this and let them know that they should spring contract for the extra hour to make sure their cake cutting and bouquet toss is captured on film or remind them they may want their photographer in the bridal suite before the ceremony to catch the private moments of getting ready with close friends and family.
Brides without a planner often lean on photographers for timing questions and to keep track of what happens when. The photographer is a creative artist who should concentrate on being in the moment and capturing the life of the event. It’s our duty to say “Ten more minutes for portraits!”, not the photographers. Think of it as a concert. The planner is the maestro, orchestrating the music, while each musician (vendor) plays their instrument with their beautiful talent. The planner’s job is not to run the show and step on the toes of vendors, but to make sure the day is executed properly to insure the wedding exceed the couple’s expectations. All in all, working together as a team is what results in an excellent and flawless day, and that’s what we do!

Chrystal and I arrive back safely and without delay last evening from our week in Sardinia, Italy. We luckily missed the impending ash cloud descending on Italy from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. I was so excited to share some images from our time on assignment at Casa Tuelada that I uploaded a few of the following. This will be the “Aperitivo” (The drink in late afternoon before a great meal), many more to come of this exclusive vacation villa as well as the portraits I took of the Bortolotti family!
My wife and I where on hand to support and enjoy the launch of a brand new on-line magazine for the green bride and groom. We were surprised to see our picture taken during the event in the latest issue. See Eco-Beautiful’s newest issue on line here, and there continually updated blog here. The event was held at 632 Hudson in the West Village (see my NYC locations guide here)
I am currently thoroughly evaluating my own business practices and carbon footprint and putting into place several meaningful changes that will help green my business, please stay tuned for an upcoming blog post on exactly what I’m doing.
